He was world-famous. Huge. Intimidating. Nobody knew his life was falling apart.

A friend walked up to him in the gym and said: "I can see the look in your eye that I used to have. I know what you're thinking. Don't do it." That friend pulled out a checkbook. And saved his life. Four words from Acts 4:23 tell us what the early church did when persecution hit, when everything fell apart, when they had been threatened and thrown in prison: "They went to their friends."

This is a sermon about what it means to not go it alone — and why most of us, especially men, are terrible at it. Jesus washed feet hours before His crucifixion. He was about to be beaten, tortured, and abandoned — and He was washing dirty feet and telling His disciples to love one another. That's what friendship looks like. And it's what the church is supposed to look like.
